GERMANY: DEMOGRAPHIC CHALLENGE TO BOOK MARKET
Article Abstract:
Norbert Rojan, head of statistics and market research of the German bookshop association Borsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, criticises German bookshops and publishers for lacking long-term planning. Figures by the Federal Statistics Office suggest that by year 2050 Germany's population will have fallen by 12mn. The share of population in the age group 40-60 will rise, while the number of people between 30 and 40 years of age will fall by about one third. The latter age group generates about 20% of the turnover of German bookshops, which amounts to about DM 18bn. A decline in this age group by 30% would thus involve a loss of revenue of about DM 1.1bn. Rojan urges publishers and bookshops to develop offerings tailored to young consumers on the one hand and elderly ones on the other, although people over 65 tend to read less than younger generations, preferring television.

GERMANY: IN-DOOR SKIING CENTRE FOR NEUSS
Article Abstract:
Pollen & Janz are the developers of a leisure project in German Neuss that is said to be unique in Europe. The project modelled according to Japanese examples involves the construction of a hall for in-door downhill skiing. The piste will be 300 metres long, with a height of 50 metres. It will be equipped with two ski lifts. The facility will include also restaurants, sports shops and service outlets. Construction start is scheduled before the end of 1999 and completion by the end of year 2000. The state of Tyrol, its tourism promotion organisation and ski lift operators are considering a participation in the project. The Austrians reckon that with such a facility far away from the mountains, more members of the new generations can become hooked on skiing.
