GERMANY: FRET SNCF CHOOSES FRANKFURT
Article Abstract:
As part of its strategy for doubling its freight traffic by 2010, the SNCF has set up a German subsidiary, Fret Deutschland. Located at Frankfurt, Fret Deutschland is expected to increase its goods traffic with Germany. Although Germany is France's principal commercial partner, goods transport by rail represents only 7mn tonnes, about a 7% market share. Clients still prefer road transport which is reliable and inexpensive, and which delivers the goods to their final destination. Setting up this German subsidiary is expected to enable the SNCF to be closer to the loaders and thus become closer to the end user. This is also part of the SNCF's desire to become a real multimodal operator in Europe.
