US TO REVOKE BAN ON INDIAN SHRIMP IMPORTS
Article Abstract:
The United States has agreed to revoke a ban imposed on import of shrimps from India. This follows a ruling to revoke the ban by the appellate body of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The US ban on shrimp imports from India, Pakistan and Malaysia was based on ecological grounds as the fishermen of these countries were not using turtle excluder devices (teds). The appellate body ruled that the ban had been imposed arbitrarily by the US. The US has, however, not mentioned when it will revoke the ban. But according to a provision of the WTO a maximum of 15 months is given for complying with the order. (uh)
