RESPONSIBLE SHIPBREAKING
Article Abstract:
Shipbreaking is a Rs2,000-crore industry in India. There are 12 shipbreaking yards in the country. About 50 percent of the world's scrapped ships are broken at Alang port in Gujarat which is also the world's largest shipbreaking yard. Ships coming for scrapping are about 28 years old. These ships are broken by hand without any protection measures. One worker dies every week, while several others are injured daily at Alang alone. Toxic and hazardous wastes are allowed to run into the sea. These scrapped ships are laden with asbestos, lead based paints, PCBs, oils and other chemicals, defined as Basal wastes. The Central Pollution Control Board of India also classifies these materials as hazardous and ships containing these materials should not be allowed for scrapping. But compliance is often a casualty in the industry focused on short term profits. (pn)
