GM advances in Europe: Detroit auto maker outperforms market with registration rise

European new-car registrations rose by 6.3% for American automobile manufacturer General Motors Corp. in September 2007 to reach 158,885 vehicles, while Ford Motor Co.'s European registrations rose by 1.1% to reach 170,047 vehicles. Renault S.A., however, saw an 11% drop in registrations, down to 105,100 vehicles.

VW holds lead in China, Toyota comes in second

Volkswagen AG continues to be the top seller of passenger vehicles in China, reporting 28% growth with 910,491 vehicles sold in 2007. Toyota Motor Corp. rose to second place, reporting 62% growth with 499,000 vehicles. General Motors Corp. reported 17% growth with 479,427 vehicles.

GM posts loss of $4.78 billion, vows turnaround

General Motors Corp. of the United States posted a $4.78 billion loss or a loss of $8.45 a share for the fourth quarter. The automobile company is planning a restructuring that includes cutting over 30,000 jobs by 2008. International operations lost $11.4 billion in 2005.
