GUNG-HO OVER THE GREEN GAS
Article Abstract:
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has proved to be a better fuel as it contains 80 percent less sulphur, emits 60 percent less carbon monoxide than coal and is less pollutant compared to naphtha. About 15 companies (Indian and international) are lining up to set up LNG facilities - the regassification plants and pipelines that link these with industrial units. Enron is working on a 5 million tonnes per annum(MTPA) LNG regassification plant to start by the end of 1998. British Gas will start work on a 2.65 MTPA regassification plant at Pipavav in Gujarat by March 1999. Royal/Dutch Shell has joined hands with Essar to set up a 2.5 MTPA plant at Hazira, Gujarat. Even public sector units like Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL), Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) together have set up a consortium by name Petronet LNG to set up a 5 MTPA LNG terminal at Dahej in Gujarat and a 2.5 MTPA terminal at Kochi in Kerala. Five consortia have been finalised for a 2.5 MTPA unit at Ennore, Tamil Nadu. With these units coming up, India has to import around 20 MTPA of LNG by 2005 AD, which may touch 70 MTPA by 2010 . By 2003, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to face a shortfall in naphtha and diesel. This has encouraged the plans for setting up of LNG units. The companies have built pipelines to supply LNG from the regassification units to the consumer's site. The increased LNG use can cause a 10-15 percent reduction in the import of Petroleum products like naphtha and diesel.(um)
