Gardini flexes his muscles
Article Abstract:
Former trader Raul Gardini, a low-profile Italian billionaire, has entered a strategic collaboration between his company, Gruppo Ferruzzi, and Carlo De Benedetti's Sabaudia Group (also an investment firm), by a shareholding alliance, whose initial act was to make Ferruzzi the largest individual shareholder in Montedison, the second largest private sector firm in Italy. Montedison participates in the chemical industries, energy industries, and service industries. Gardini purchased a 14.5 percent interest in Montedison (with De Benedetti's help) for $500 million. Gardini's influence on Montedison is described, a biography of Gardini is provided, and descriptions of his trading activities on the Chicago and London markets are discussed. Gardini's Ferruzzi Group has invested in shipping, farmland, railroads, and cement.
