Gatt to be good
Article Abstract:
Asia's economic success demonstrates the benefits attributable to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Gatt). Gatt, which has reduced trade barriers and created the most-favored-nation status, has fueled economic progress and has forced each country's domestic industries to modernize to avoid being overwhelmed by foreign competitors. Under Gatt, Asia's economy grew by 7% in 1992 while its volume of trade went up by 4.5%. The current Uruguay Round of talks on a reshaped Gatt will probably succeed in extending the beneficial effects of liberalized trade exemplified in Asia to the whole world.

Article Abstract:
Asian businessmen fear that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may lead to the creation of an American trade bloc, as free-trade agreements have become common among North and South American nations. Although trade agreements such as the one between Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, do not give these countries free access to NAFTA, they are viewed by many as a prelude to a bigger trade block. Asian countries are worried that this could lead to a decrease in foreign investment in Asia and might reduce their share of the American market.

Article Abstract:
The US House of Representatives has drafted a bill aimed at renewing trade initiatives against Japan. The bill will limit the production and sale of Japanese cars in the US through a bilateral 'voluntary restraint agreement' and will require investigation of barriers set by Japan, South Korea and Taiwan against rice exports as well as Japanese policies on the entry of American cars into their market. Japanese trade officials have voiced their opposition to the bill.
