Get a grip: China seeks to bring order to Pearl River Delta
Article Abstract:
Government officials in the province of Guangdong, China have devised the Pearl River Delta Development Plan for controlling rampant economic growth, which has harmed the quality of life and the environment in the region. Since the early 1980s business and industry has grown tremendously in this once rural province. The plan bans certain companies from the region, imposes pollution controls, reserves land for the raising of food, and plans investment in infrastructure and industry. Foreign investors may lose money if they do not invest in companies that are being assisted by the plan.

Made to order
Article Abstract:
China has added the People's Armed Police, a paramilitary force, to the forces targeted for Hong Kong once the takeover is complete in 1997 to control expected unrest. This decision has increased tensions between Hong Kong residents and China because the Chinese army is not well respected and the Armed Police has a worse reputation. The rest of the garrison to be assigned to Hong Kong has not been decided upon because of political issues and internal power plays over top officer assignments.
