One of a kind: unconventional designer returns home to test-drive his far-out ideas
Article Abstract:
Designer and architectural engineer Quasar Khanh returned recently to his native Vietnam to help transform the country with progressive urban designs. In the 1950s he helped launch the miniskirt craze, and created the 1960s fad for inflatable furniture, earning a reputation as fashion's enfant terrible. Now he wants to build a bridge in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, using spiral ramps to avoid planning problems. He is also trying to put into production his Bambooclette, a bicycle that uses bamboo for much of its structure.

Odd bedfellows; a little piece of Singapore in Vietnam
Article Abstract:
The Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park is a joint-venture project in Vietnam's Song Be province that is 49% owned by the Vietnamese and 51% owned by Singaporean interests. The park will open in 1997 and is intended to link efficient Singaporean marketing and management experience with Vietnam's inexpensive labor and raw materials. The partnership brings together two very different political systems: the reforming Communist Vietnamese government and the decisively capitalistic Singapore system.
