Battle of Trafalgar
Article Abstract:
Hongkong Land Holdings Ltd has acquired 14.9% stake in troubled Trafalgar House PLC shares and is bidding to gain control by acquiring 15% more. Trafalgar told shareholders to deny the bid because Hongkong Land's price severely undervalued the shares but Trafalgar's floundering share price and doubtful leadership makes its success seem inevitable. Hongkong Land claims a long-term stategic interest in Trafalgar but analysts question the property development and management firm's goals for the construction and engineering company.

A neigh at the races
Article Abstract:
India's Supreme Court on Jan 12 ruled against Madras's 22-year-old ban on horseracing, finding that betting on horses is a matter of skill rather than gambling. Nevertheless, most punters believe the races are rigged, so in addition to studying horses' closing speeds they scrutinize the body language of jockeys and trainers. The 1974 ban never stopped the racing or the betting for long, thanks to various legal challenges, and in fact for years the state was forced to operate the races itself.
