Shady commerce
Article Abstract:
Many Vietnamese manufacturers of engines, textiles, bicycles and other light industrial products are being threatened by cheap Chinese goods smuggled across the border. The smuggling is run by greedy entrepreneurs on both sides of the border who move goods into Vietnam via remote mountain trails and by companies who move goods via ships and trucks and bribe customs authorities. Smuggling became more rampant since both countries improved their relations and implemented economic reforms.

Good samaritans
Article Abstract:
The people of Malaysia have donated $3.9 million to help ease the famine in North Korea. This amount makes Malaysia the largest donor of aid to North Korea. The Malaysian people have been generous because they remember the struggle for survival in their own country before it became economically independent. The aid appeal was launched by a newspaper and donations have been coming in from young and old alike even though some people fear the money will not reach those who need it.

Chasing the Lion
Article Abstract:
Countries neighbouring Singapore are seeking to compete with the city-state's position as a regional high-tech, shipping and finance centre. They are improving port and airport facilities, for example, and are looking to encourage fund managers and multinational companies to base more of their activities outside Singapore. It is now becoming increasingly accepted that Singapore may lose ground, and it realises that it may have to share its leading position with other countries.
