The right stuff? For Malaysia's Metrojaya, upmarket may not be enough
Article Abstract:
Metrojaya, a department store chain that is Malaysia's third biggest retailer in sales, faces a serious challenge from Japanese retailers who hope to cut into the upscale market that Metrojaya has traditionally targeted. This challenge may prevent Metrojaya from increasing its profits unless it can either grow or reduce costs. Moreover, some analysts believe that Malaysia's demand for Metrojaya's line of luxury goods may have reached its upper limit. However, Metrojaya and its holding company, Pan Malaysian Industries, believe the market will grow and are planning new stores.

Article Abstract:
Maika Holdings is the investment arm of the ruling Malaysian Indian Congress. The firm, rocked by a sex scandal involving a top official in 1989, is again the subject of government investigations following allegations that several of its top officers were involved in the misappropriation of 9 million shares belonging to the national telecommunications firm Telekom Malaysia. Observers say the seriousness of the allegations jeopardizes the future of the company.
