The world recession has hurt the chemical industry everywhere, but Italy's state-owned Enichimica has seen profits plummet especially low due to government meddling in the mismanaged company. Andreotti himself vetoed privatization and stepped in to defend a political friend involved in the company.

Christian Democrat Mario Segni of Italy is leading the Popular Movement for Reform that he hopes will replace Italy's proportional representation system. His idea has popular support, but Segni may have to leave the Christian Democrats and form a new alliance to see it succeed.
