Prices for common goods in Russia soared after central economic planning ceased on Jan 2. Many observers felt this indicated Boris Yeltsin's reforms were a failure, but this assessment is premature. A market economy is being created, and full market pricing will eventually arrive.

Capitalism is likely to win out over Communism in Russia but it is unclear which type of capitalism will prevail - crony capitalism or free-market capitalism. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov leads the crony capitalism faction, but free-market capitalism lacks a 'single, torch bearer.'
