Italy's earthquake

Italy's Apr 1992 elections have produced a political logjam. The ruling four-party coalition headed by the Christian Democrats and the Socialists is not expected to able to form a government. The largest electoral gains were registered by candidates of the regionalist Northern League, who polled 8.7%.

Leaders of the Christian Democrats have given party secretary Mino Martinazzoli power to structure reform of the party, including possibly changing its name to the Italian Popular Party. Martinazzoli has thus far avoided discussing possible alliances with other parties for the upcoming election.

The ruling Socialists' share of the vote in the Dec elections fell by 3.6%, and their main coalition partners, the Christian Democrats, suffered nearly a 5% decline. The Northern League was the main beneficiary of voter dissatisfaction with the ruling parties.
