God's own republic?
Article Abstract:
Australians are voting in a referendum on whether to abolish the monarchy, They may decide to do so in ther interests of democracy, but may also retain the monarchy since they do not appear to trust Australian politicians. A republic could mean that the president is controlled by the prime minister. Both Australia and Canada seek identities, and Canada can differentiate itself from the US by being a monarchy, while Australia does not have the same sorts of links to Britain.

Article Abstract:
Australia is holding a referendum on whether to become a republic in Nov 1999. There may be less support for this idea than there was some years ago when the monarchy was seen as a remnant of a colonial past. There are divisions between the republicans, and disagreements over the role of a president in a republic, and how he should be elected. The republicans also have to win in four states of a total of six, as well as in Australia as a whole.
