Privatisation of large firms in Britain spawned the new trend of selling equity on a global scale. Sales methods have changed to allow for differences between laws and traditions in nations. Using computer records for 'open book-building' has become common.

Early warning signs of the economic crisis that hit East Asia in Fall, 1997 were ignored, particularly in Thailand. Current-account deficits of 8% GDP signalled unsound fundamentals in economies whose currencies were pegged to the U.S. dollar.

Currency exchange rates effect the prices on foreign securities and the stock of firms which invest in import or export business. A study by Yakov Amihud of New York University of the stocks of 32 US exporters supported these conclusions.
