Going public the right way

Article Abstract:

The Halifax and Leeds Permanent building societies were aware right from the beginning of their discussions about a merger that such a plan would not remain a secret for very long. The scope of the deal, involving around one fifth of the UK's population, made it impossible to conceal. Leeds Permanent had already come to public attention with some high-profile marketing, but was prepared to lose its identity in merging with Halifax, the UK's largest building society. The merger is now likely to form a model for other similar deals.

Republican presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan prescribes his solutions to the country's growing economic and social problems. Buchanan recommends the recall of US troops from Japan and South Korea and the termination of foreign aid to most developing countries. Buchanan also urges trade authorities to adopt measures that will enable the US to cope with economic developments in Japan and the European Community.
