Gold-medal politics: Peking bids for 2000 Olympics: 'a more open China'?

Article Abstract:

China's government is doing its utmost to persuade the International Olympic Committee to select Peking as the site of the 27th Summer Olympic Games in 2000. The Committee will announce its decision on Sep 23, 1993 and will probably opt for either Peking or Sydney, Australia. Chinese dissidents oppose Peking's bid on the grounds that the Chinese regime responsible for the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre does not merit such an honor. However, hosting the Olympics might force the Communist government to limit its more flagrantly tyrannical practices.

Recent moves by China point to the country's hegemonic interest in the South China Sea region. The Feb 25, 1992 announcement by China of a new law on its territorial waters and adjacent zones covering the disputed Spratly islands and Senkaku islands is proof of China's ambition to become the region's new power broker, replacing the US and USSR. Observers believe that China's recent moves could have negative effects on the peaceful efforts to solve the Spratlys issue.
