Goodbye to the Mamluks
Article Abstract:
A battle in 1516 was won by the Ottoman forces who defeated the maluk forces and ended the Mamluk empire, which had predominated for 500 years, led from Cairo, and which gave way to Ottoman Turkish rule. The Mamluks had dominated the world's spice trade, and their empire extended from beyond Mecca, and to Aleppo and Alexandria. The Ottomans respected local leaders and maintained low customs tariffs, welcoming foreign merchants. Their tax and administration system was cohesive, and there were large religious minorities which were able to prosper.

Goodbye ... and hello
Article Abstract:
There are many different pictures which have captured the poignant aspects of the transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the UK to China. They all give an indication of the great significance of this event. Prince Charles and Chinese President Jiang Zemin were the main dignitaries present as a PLA soldier raised the Chinese flag over Hong Kong for the first time. This picture contrasts sharply with one which shows pro-democracy campaigners burning pictures of Chinese Premier Li Peng.
