Great educator and belated Modernist
Article Abstract:
Charles Herbert Reilly was an architect who held the chair of architecture at Liverpool University for almost 30 years, between 1904 and 1933. Like many other young architects of the period, Reilly looked to the US as the new power in world architecture and many students from Liverpool University gained work experience in America. Reilly endorsed the Modernist work of Carrere & Hastings and McKim, Mead & White as a counter to the exaggerated architecture of the Edwardian period.

Unshakeable pragmatism
Article Abstract:
F.R.S. Yorke founded the architectural practice, YRM in 1944. The firm, strongly influenced by Yorke's Arts and Crafts views, adopted the principle of pragmatic design. YRM achieved a styleless form of modern architecture which is currently unpopular. Its best known buildings include Warwick University, Gatwick Airport and St Thomas's hospital, London, England. YRM continues to be successful and although it has responded to current trends, Yorke's influence remains.
