Savers vs spenders
Article Abstract:
The different climate and weather of North and South Vietnam has been a major factor in determining lifestyles of peasants and farmers. The North is plagued by harsh winters and frequent typhoons and floods which has caused peasants to build cement or brick houses to protect themselves. The South, on the other hand, has a more moderate tropical climate so peasants are satisfied with wooden or thatch houses. Moreover, northern villages are tightly grouped within bamboo hedges as compared to southern houses which are more scattered.

Victims of neglect: lack of education, poor health plague minorities
Article Abstract:
Illiteracy and poor health are two of the most serious problems facing the minorities in the highlands of Vietnam. Illiteracy among the Bana stands at 80% and ranks 90% in the Hmong tribe. Sexual bias results in even more dismal figures for women. There are no funds to build enough schools, and teacher recruitment proves difficult due to the low living standards and the high risks of getting sick. Goiter plagues 41-43% of populations in some areas, and in 1990 140,000 cases of malaria were reported, of which 3,340 died.

'Flower sellers' bloom: some sell sex 20 times a night
Article Abstract:
Prostitution is thriving in Vietnam, especially in Ho Chi Minh City. Official reports estimate that 100,000 prostitutes now work in the city while another 500,000 work elsewhere in the country. The government attributes the country's rising sex industry to foreign influence, but research shows that 90% of the prostitutes' clients are Vietnamese. Rampant prostitution is worrisome because of its potential for spreading HIV and Aids. However, most HIV cases in Vietnam have occurred among the rising drug addict population.
