Ground zero
Article Abstract:
The political future of Indonesia's President Suharto seems to be increasingly in doubt as the country faces severe economic crisis. The international community is putting pressure on him to meet the conditions of a $33 billion rescue package from the International Monetary Fund, but some observers believe that Indonesia's economic problems will only be resolved if there are changes to the country's political leadership. However, there is no obvious alternative to Suharto, and analysts believe that he will be able to dictate his own terms if and when he decides to resign.

Article Abstract:
President Suharto of Indonesia has astonished political experts by returning a law passed to him for approval by the Indonesian parliament. This is the first time that the President has requested reconsideration on a law already passed by parliament. The changes to the broadcasting law requested by the President include some of the issues raised by private broadcasting stations, including the extension of operating licences for the private television channels. President Suharto's daughter and son have considerable stakes in four of the five private broadcasters.
