Growing numbers of migrant laborers point up chaos in China's economy
Article Abstract:
The relaxation of state controls has given China's population the privilege of free movement. However, this freedom is rapidly becoming a problem for the government as millions of peasants migrate from the countryside and converge on urban areas in search of their fortunes. These migrant laborers serve as a cheap labor pool for China's nascent industries but the vast majority, unskilled and possessing little savings, arrive in the cities with no ready jobs and very little hope of finding employment. Some analysts believe these migrant laborers could eventually become a destabilizing factor in China's social order.
