Sic transit gloria
Article Abstract:
Italy's central bank, the Bank of Italy, has lost influence with European monetary union, but has a reputation for competence and honesty. The bank has moved to new offices, but is a less attractive place to work for young Italians than it used to be, and they have come to prefer investment banks. The bank has 9,000 staff and some 100 provincial offices which tend to be little used. The bank still suffers from too little transparency and is averse to market forces.

Debit Lyonnais, again
Article Abstract:
The French government should not provide bail-out funds to Credit Lyonnais unless the bank becomes better managed. The state-owned bank received $4 billion in aid in 1994 and now wants additional funds. Poor investments caused the bank's equity-at-risk ratio to exceed 300%.
