WELL PACKED GRAPES ARE NOT SOUR
Article Abstract:
In the last 3 years, the exports of grapes has stagnated due to lack of post-harvest facilities, from the farm level to the export market. In 1997-98, exports of grapes were 20,000-22,000 tonnes, worth Rs52 crore, against the target of 28,000 tonnes, worth Rs70 crore. Some of the problems faced by the industry are lack of uniformity in quality, taste, colour, aroma and other specifications, lack of education among gorwers, processors and exporters and absence of basic awareness regarding cold-chain workshop. Some of the post-harvest problems are moisture loss leading to shrivelling of berries, the drying of stem, resulting in the shattering of berries, and lack of packing and transportation facilities.
