COPRA CONUNDRUM
Article Abstract:
The Government of India has decided to revise the minimum support price of copra to Rs3,100 per quintal. The minimum support price of copra was Rs2,500 per quintal in 1996, Rs2,700 in 1997 and Rs2,900 in 1998. India produced 7.5 lakh tonnes of copra in 1998. Kerala accounted for 4.5 lakh tonnes of copra. Yet, the procurement has not been more than 10,000 tonnes in the past 2-3 years. The market price did not fall below the minimum support price in 1996 and 1997. Tamil Nadu has emerged as a major coconut producer and the season starts during June-July and ends in November every year. The procurement operations are not helpful to the market. The procurement agencies cannot buy large quantities to prop up the price of copra. Coconut plantations are not surveyed properly and the data on production of coconut and coconut oil are not accurate. The available trade estimates are not precise. (rk) (kvr)
