THE SAD EFFECT UNSETTLES PC PRICING
Article Abstract:
The government had imposed an 8 percent special additional duty (SAD) on personal computers (PCs) in the 1998-99 budget. The 8 percent duty has now been reduced to 4 percent. This has created a confusion among the PC manufactures on whether or not to increase the prices of PCs. Import duties on integrated circuits, duties on stepper motors, hard disk drives, floppy disk drives and colour graphic tubes have declined while duties on key parts, populated PCs and storage items have increased. The prices of Pentium-based PCs are expected to increase while the prices of P- II based PCs are expected to decline. (rk)
