THINK, DON'T LET `EM SINK
Article Abstract:
India's stone industry has been adversely affected due to the lack of a uniform national mining policy and reduced demand from South East Asia. India has about 25 percent of the world's granite reserves but lacks the advanced technology to exploit the reserves to the maximum. Exports of Indian granite and marble products touched Rs1425 crore in 1996-97 but declined to Rs1300 crore in 1997-98. The main markets for the products are Japan, the US, Germany and Italy. The domestic stone industry will suffer unless the Union government persuades the states to formulate a cohesive policy governing factors like quarry leases, dead rent, royalties and transportation.
