Article Abstract:
The production of cement was 62 lakh tonnes in October 1998 (57.4 lakh tonnes in September 1998). The offtake of cement was 62.1 lakh tonnes (57.2 lakh tonnes). The despatches of cement increased by 8.6 percent in October 1998 but they were lower than 63.39 lakh tonnes in October 1997. Cement output was lower by 11.15 percent in October 1998 compared to 70.10 lakh tonnes in October 1997. The price of cement in the eastern States like West Bengal, Bihar and Assam increased to Rs175 a bag in October 1998 from Rs137 a bag in April 1998. The cement price was stable at Rs135-140 a bag in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. In Mumbai, the price of cement fell by Rs20 between April and October 1998. The total production of cement between April and October 1998 was 469.6 lakh tonnes (448.8 lakh tonnes during April-October 1997). The despatches of cement during April-October 1998 increased by 5.63 percent compared to those in the same period of 1997. Manufacturers reduced the production of cement during April- October 1998. The supply was less between May and September 1998. The demand for cement is likely to increase with the infrastructure projects coming up soon. (rk)

VIKRAM SETS THE CAST FOR REVAMP II

The Rs462-crore Vikram Cement Ltd (VCL), a division of Grasim Industries, is poised to start the second phase of its restructuring programme. The programme will be implemented from January 1999 through year 2001 and is aimed at cutting production costs while improving equipment efficiencies. VCL expects cost savings of around Rs104 crore by 2001 AD. It is reducing its power cost by meeting 75 percent of its power consumption via captive power generation. VCL has installed 42 mega watt generating sets against a requirement of 38 mega watt of power. VCL's management has also identified 44 processes where costs can be cut significantly. (tsm)

L&T EYES ACQUISITIONS IN BID TO AUGMENT CAPACITY

Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) plans take up acquisition route for widening its cement capacity. The company has a total cement capacity of 10.65 million tonnes per annum. Its cement plants which contribute 20 percent to the company's turnover includes plant at Tadpatri in Andhra Pradesh, 2.55 million tonnes plant at Awarpur in Maharashtra, 1.4 million tonnes Hirmi Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh, 0.7 million tonnes grinding unit at Jharsuguda in Orissa and four million tonnes plant at Kovaya in Gujarat.
