HSBC's interim results have analysts on tenterhooks: many ask how banking giant, seen widening provisions 128% in '98, will spread out write-offs
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong stock market analysts are divided over their projections for banking giant HSBC Holdings PLC, especially puzzled over how the banking giant manages its HK$17.8 bil in provisions for 1998. Two scenarios are being mulled by analysts as the possible course for HSBC's provisions, one is the delay in reporting the write-off and the other a gung-ho immediate write-off. Whichever course the bank takes, analysts are unanimous in rating HSBC stocks as a buy for long-term investment. HSBC is expected to post either a 9% drop in net profits or a 1% increase, depending on how HSBC handles the provisions.
