Hong Kong faces an economic, financial identity crisis
Article Abstract:
Two years after the 1997 Asian financial crisis, a nascent recovery is taking place in the region but Hong Kong does not seem to be part of it. The former British colony's gross domestic product is predicted to further shrink by 0.5% in 1999, following a 5.1% contraction in 1998. Since being turned over to China in 1997, the mainland has largely left the island to run its own affairs. However, this has increased the dissatisfaction of citizens with the way the Hong Kong government is administering the island, exacerbating Hong Kong's economic and financial troubles.

TraHK fund hits the rails: managers see benefits in low-level market
Article Abstract:
Many fund managers expect the Hong Kong government to be able to easily dispose a large portion its portfolio through the new index Tracker Fund or TraHK, which was created specifically for such purpose. The Hong Kong government intends to unload through TraHK about 75% of its total stocks worth about $26 billion. Fund managers also speculate that the TraHK will be more attractive at the low-level market.
