Habibie takes the reins as country's new vice president
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly declared B.J. Habibie, research and technology minister since 1978, as the country's new vice president. Habibie is a longtime friend of Suharto who will begin his fourth decade as president of Indonesia. Critics of Habibie's appointment fear that he will support Suharto's truculent stand against the International Monetary Fund. Others, however, see a more collective leadership, with Habibie having the capability to influence Suharto, because of the long-term political relationship the two had in the past.
