Hans Eichel, stodgy but safe
Article Abstract:
German finance minister, Hans Eichel, was state premier of Hesse, Germany, for eight years, and has moved to the political right, favoring measures to boost investment and employment. His skills in building a consensus may become useful since he follows Oskar Lafontaine in the post of finance miister, and there was opposition to many of Lafontaine's ideas. Eichel is seen as favoring business more than did Lafontaine, and he is likely to stress the need for structural reform of the German economy.
