Living in a manhole
Article Abstract:
There has been a rise in the numbers of street children in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, where they live underground near heating and sewage systems. The children suffer a number of health problems such as TB and sexually transmitted diseases. Subsidies accounted for some 33% of the gross domestic product of Mongolia in Soviet times, and the withdrawal of these has left many families too poor to care for their children, with numbers of street children rising to some 4,000 in 2000 from 300 in 1992. A number of organizations are seeking the help children finish schooling and prevent them from ending up on the streets, as well as helping children who are there.
