Have gun, will kill
Article Abstract:
The Mar 22, 1992, election in Thailand will be a profitable time for hired political assassins, whose main targets include the hua khanen. The hua khanen, or vote canvassers, wield influence in the provinces and remote regions, creating inevitable rivalries with other hua khanen in search of political support for their own candidates. Political violence is widespread, especially in Chonburi province and Petchaburi, which boast of a number of notorious paid killers. To deal with the problem, the police have created a task force to monitor suspected hired assassins, who already number from 800 to 2,000.

Where money talks
Article Abstract:
Vote-buying in Thailand has been an accepted way of life especially for impoverished people living in the densely populated northeast regions, such as Isarn. A hua khanen or vote canvasser is instrumental in gathering votes for candidates and makes the illegal transactions openly. Efforts by the government to discourage vote-buying include the widespread use of media personalities and children. The most substantial contribution is Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun's establishment of Poll Watch, which is designed to look into election violations.

Harvesting the votes
Article Abstract:
The success of pro-democracy parties in Thailand's general elections in Sep 13, 1993 would depend on their ability to overcome votebuying initiated by traditional parties and espouse a policy close to the hearts and minds of voters living in neglected areas. One such party, the National Aspirations Party of Chavalit Yongchaiyut, has good chances of winning seats in areas such as Sisaket province.
