Hexagons for systems thinking
Article Abstract:
The use of movable hexagons to conceptualize stages in management decision making is an innovation in system dynamics. The hexagons encourage lateral thinking and can be color coded to stimulate more effective and strategic thinking. Idons, or visual idea-representing icons, can also be concretized by the use of hexagons to express deeper thoughts from mental models. Hexagons have proven effective as an unblocking device in management meetings for planning and evaluation. This technique is further enhanced by the use of magnetic hardware and idonic software, such as the CK Modeller.

Estimating reorder points and other management science applications by bootstrap procedure
Article Abstract:
A resampling method, called the bootstrap procedure, is used to estimate the optimum lead-time demand distribution and reorder points for an inventory control system. The method performs well with regard to the exact distribution and with other methods provided that the daily demands are either independent or autocorrelated. The bootstrap procedure is also applicable to other estimation problems with unknown component distributions and the available sample realizations are small to moderate and the true model is uncertain.

Experimentation in learning organizations: a management flight simulator approach
Article Abstract:
Management flight simulators can enhance organizational learning in learning laboratories by improving analysis and questioning skills of managers. The use of flight simulators creates a non-threatening environment that allows freer experimentation and more effective transfer of learning. Case studies illustrate the effectivity of flight simulators in responding to service quality management issues, effectively implementing and measuring learning, and enhancing the transfer of learning.
