Honduras to sell power company
Article Abstract:
Several Central American nations are preparing to privatize their telecommunications and energy infrastructures. Honduras is preparing to sell all of its state-owned National Electricity and Energy Co (ENEE) as part of its loan deal with the International Monetary Fund. Guatemala has already sold its energy tender to Spanish utility Union Fenosa for an 80 percent share in Distribuidora Electrica de Occidente and Distribuidora Electrica de Oriente; the government will sell its remaining 20 percent stake, placing about 13 percent on the local stock exchange and offering seven percent to workers. The tender for Nicaragua's Nicaraguan Telecommunications (Enitel) is now open as Telefonos de Mexico and Telefonica International qualified to bid for 40 percent of the state-owned firm. Panama has sold its four electricity generating companies for $301 million after splitting them from the state power company.

Decision not to sell Jamaica power
Article Abstract:
Plans to privatize electricity monopoly Jamaica Public Service Co. have been postponed by the Jamaican government because the bids it received were unsatisfactory. Two U.S. companies, Southern Electric of Georgia and Texas's Houston Industries Energy, had been shortlisted from an initial total of eight bidders. It is thought that the change of heart is the result of political pressure, particularly from trade unions, which were afraid that the sale could result in job losses.
