Hong Kong fears for the future of its vital service sector
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong residents are fearful that the country's service industry will be hurt by the return of the country to Chinese sovereignty. The service industry currently holds 84% of Hong Kong's economic output and industry proponents worry that the labor force will be diluted by mainland residents and that other industries may migrate elsewhere in Asia. Figures however, show that the influx of businesses is higher than the ones leaving and that businesses continue to be attracted to the country's facilities which are superior to that of its neighbors.

Hong Kong under the lens: credit-rating agencies turn cautious
Article Abstract:
Moody's Investors Service is evaluating the ratings of Hong Kong's short-term foreign loans in response to the financial crisis sweeping throughout the region. Other credit rating agencies are following suit but the stock market shrugged off the news showing a 7.4% increase in volume for the second week of January 1998. There are, however, fears that a bloated property market may be headed for a downturn and that high volatility will take its toll on the market.
