Foreign media are turned off by bill to regulate TV

Broadcasters investing in India are cautious of the country's social policy claiming that regulatory efforts may affect the influx of foreign investment. Media investors like News Corp., Turner Broadcasting System Inc. and Capital Cities/ABC are hopeful that the broadcasting bill, which imposes excessive controls on the broadcasting industry, will be amended before it is voted upon by Parliament later in 1997.

News Corp., under the management of Rupert Murdoch, has finally been able to find a way to market television channels in China. The company, through its Star TV unit, has signed a joint venture agreement with Today's Asia Ltd. and China Wise International Ltd. The newly formed entity would not bear the Star brand name but instead would be named Phoenix Satellite Television Co.
