Hong Kong's great divide: stock surge splits fund managers, analysts
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's fund managers are divided over the future of stock market. Benchmark stock-market index has risen by 42%, more firms are leaning towards new-share sales of HK$5 billion and valuations are hitting historic highs. These factors prompt analysts to advise investors to switch out of blue-chip stocks. On the other hand, many fund managers and even those who expect the market to drop within six months do not intend to let go of their shares. This means that there would be a short and moderate correction to the Hang Seng Index if there is any.

Taiwan lures fund managers; seeking turnaround, some shift focus to island
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong-based portfolio manager of Nicholas-Applegate Capital Management's China Growth Fund, Tim Greaton, is planning to transfer about 10% of the fund's portfolio into Taiwan stocks. The move is due to the 28% loss average that Chinese funds experienced in 1998. Despite the economic restructuring policy of China, the slow pace of reform has resulted in a massive decline of more than 40% in the main indexes of Class B shares. Greaton expects Taiwan shares to bounce back despite a decline of more than 20% in 1998.
