Hopeless in Bangkok: Thai infrastructure plans create a new kind of jam
Article Abstract:
The planned infrastructure projects of Thailand's newly elected government could spell a whole new set of public works headaches for the country. In 1990, this same group of politicians awarded a $3.2 billion infrastructure project to Hopewell Holdings Inc. The project is less than 10% completed due to conflicts between the government and the firm. History now seems to be repeating itself with the announcement of plans to construct new roads, airports and railroads by Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa.

Outcome of Thai election not likely to shift policy
Article Abstract:
A change in Thailand's leadership is unlikely to affect government policies. However, PM Chuan Leekpai and his Democrat Party are trying their best to block the victory of the Palang Dharma Party, which is headed by telecommunications tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra. If Palang Dharma gets majority of the seats in Parliament, Thailand will remain a country dominated by business leaders. Since the Sept. 1992 elections, Thai's cabinet has included five former bank presidents or chairmen.
