Deep discount
Article Abstract:
The value of short term investment projects can be assessed relatively easily, and a cost-benefit analysis is used with a discount rate calculated after inflation. Very long term projects such as those that may bear fruit after 200 years, are much more difficult to assess. There is uncertainty attached to such projects and tastes change over time. It is not easy to assess the benefits of a project to others, and it is easier to assess the benefits to oneself. This is true of global warming, and efforts to deal with the problem will affect future generations.

Hot stuff
Article Abstract:
Genomic Research in Rockville, MD, has analyzed the genetic makeup of a 'thermophile,' a micro-organism that lives in hot springs and fumaroles. It is hoped that the examination of the thermophile, called Methanococcus jannaschii, will provide answers to the ancestor of all existing life.
