The recession in Japan has eroded the profit-making capacity of its auto industry, such that many firms are set to post losses for 1992. The long term prospects for a recovery in the industry are dim, since its key competitive advantages over US competitors, such as lower labor costs, no longer exist.

Japan tries to change its tune
Article Abstract:
The economic slowdown in Japan is forcing it to look at its trade relationships with other countries. Its trade surplus is still climbing, causing negative reaction in trading partner countries. Some tariffs and restrictions may be lifted.
