A three-day festival dedicated to the music of Alban Berg was held at London's Barbican centre. In the works of Berg, one of the leading members of the Second Viennese School, the formality and inaccessibility of much serial music is tempered by an appealing lyricism.

Nicholas Kenyon staged a commendable series of concerts during the 1997 BBC Promenade, which ran for eight weeks and featured 81 concerts. Kenyon programmed popular music as well as classics. Next year he hopes to draw in more young people by featuring more new music.

Poetry International was a London based festival that began in the late 60s and brought some of the world's best poets together for a public reading. The festival has been revived and the 1992 version brought 50 of the world's best poets back to London.
