Slower than a speeding bullet
Article Abstract:
Texas A and M University's George Welch has announced that the speed of light can be slowed considerably if it passes through rubidium gas. This discovery has implications for a number of applications such as optical switches, and the transmission and storage of information. Other researchers in this area include University of California's Atac Immamoglu, a specialist in optical engineering, who sees communications developments arising from the research.

Siemens of Germany and GEC Alsthom, an Anglo-French joint venture, are vying against a Japanese consortium for a South Korean high-speed train contract. Each company has sold advanced train technology to domestic monopolies, but exports are needed achieve a good return on the tremendous R&D investment.
