How racist is France?
Article Abstract:
Racism remains a serious problem in France, even though many French people welcomed the fact that the country's 1998 World Cup-winning football team contained players from many different ethnic backgrounds. France has a long history of immigration, but four out of 10 French people admit to being racist, according to an official study. Many people born into long-standing French families do not accept that people can become French citizens through birth or naturalization. However, six in 10 white Frenchmen state that they have friends among minority groups.

Go, France
Article Abstract:
Michelin's 'Guide Rouge' remains the most popular guide to French hotels and restaurants, selling 580,000 copies in 1997. However, it is facing competition from newer publications, including Routard's 'Hotels et Restos de France.' Gallimard, France's leading literary publisher, has also moved into travel books. Its guides are extremely well illustrated, and its volume on medieval France is particularly attractive. It is also worth considering Hachette's 'Voir' series.
