Playing with fire: an attack on Taiwan would be costly for China
Article Abstract:
Experts worldwide are examining military scenarios for an attack by China on Taiwan or its possessions, as well as related actions Beijing could take as it applies pressure regarding Taiwan's presidential elections. An outright, seaborne invasion would be all but impossible, and other attacks on Taiwan itself are unpalatable. Seizing one of Taiwan's small islands off China's cost, however, would be feasible, though alarming. The US may be the most concerned outside nation, with its credibility in the region at stake.

Spare the rod: states drop measures to emulate Singapore
Article Abstract:
At least seven US states have seen measures to implement corporal punishment defeated, apparently because of connotations of authoritarianism and slavery. The issue came to public attention when teenager Michael Fay was punished in Singapore for vandalism by four strokes from a rattan cane. US President Bill Clinton tried to intervene, stirring many Americans to protest that Singapore was right. Still, despite Singapore's apparent success with such punishments, they might not have much effect in the US.
