How we grew
Article Abstract:
Political stability and development of political institutions to address the complexities of integrated societies are essential components of sustained economic growth that Southeast Asian nations will have to address. Economic development leads to formation of groups with divergent interests, and the risk of political instability increases. Failure to address these concerns can result in slowing of economic growth, and slowed economic growth can breed further political unrest. Southeast Asia must also be aware of its political and economic interdependence on nations outside the region.

The different faces of democracy
Article Abstract:
Democracy does not necessarily weaken economic growth as some Asian leaders contend. Some Asian countries have inherited democracy from colonial powers, some may institute it when communist regimes fall from power, but there is also a third group of Asian countries that replaced authoritarianism with democracy because their leaders realized that this step was essential to further economic development. Thailand, South Korea and Taiwan exemplify this third group and show that democracy can result from successful capitalism.

Give China 'time and space.' (economic growth could be threat or promise)
Article Abstract:
China's economic and military growth has been a source of concern especially among Asian nations and yet could also be a source of opportunities for other countries. Therefore, rather than attempting to prevent or limit the growth, efforts should be made to unite China with international investments and trade systems as well as global security and politics. Given the opportunity and the time, China is likely to improve its conditions economically, socially and politically.
